Downey-Sarcastic and playful
Recently Robert Downey Jr. has taken a beating for some comments he said about Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. Alejandro had made some comments himself about how he couldn't appreciate superhero films. Calling them basic.
Here is what he said:
'I sometimes enjoy them because they are basic and simple and go well with popcorn. The problem is that sometimes they purport to be profound, based on some Greek mythological kind of thing. And they are honestly very right wing.
'I always see them as killing people because they do not believe in what you believe, or they are not being who you want them to be.
I hate that, and don't respond to those characters. They have been poison, this cultural genocide, because the audience is so overexposed to plot and explosions and shit that doesn't mean nothing about the experience of being human.
He added: 'Superheroes…just the word hero bothers me. What the f*** does that mean?
'It's a false, misleading conception, the superhero. Then, the way they apply violence to it, it's absolutely right wing.
'If you observe the mentality of most of those films, it's really about people who are rich, who have power, who will do the good, who will kill the bad. Philosophically, I just don't like them.'
Downey not only defending the franchise but the work he does himself may have "crossed a line" but what sensitive people tend to forget how sarcastic and blunt Downey can be.
He said in reply: 'Look I respect the heck out of him. I think for a man whose native tongue is Spanish to be able to put together a phrase like 'cultural genocide' just speaks to how bright he is.'
Of course the response to his comment has been one of many people becoming very outraged by how "ignorant" it was.

The actor, 50, made the remarks when asked what he thought of Birdman director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's claim that superhero movies were 'cultural genocide'.
This article mentions both the comment and the interview even though one has nothing to do with the other.
Not everything in movies has to be about the human experience. People would get so sick of it. The point of films is to escape your everyday life. Marvel Movies are not just that, they're based on the comics. So at the point he's saying not even our reading materials should have any sort of excitement. The man made his own opinion but said it in a way that people should rely on. But that isn't fair to people who are in the same line of work as him. Just because they don't create what he sees as philosophically correct.
Downey a man who typically plays roles in films that require depth and a lot of human insight probably got very offended by his statement and made a comment he probably shouldn't have said.
Not too long before the comment was made Downey did an interview in which they went from promoting the Avengers sequel to asking questions about his past. Which had nothing to do with his role in the film. Everyone who knows who Downey is knows the answers to those questions already. The interviewer brought up a quote from an interview that happened years ago. Again not relevant.
Downey shouldn't have to explain his past over and over again. He's made his peace and has already answered questions on it in several interviews. He has moved on. Just to assume he's still making adjustments to life is absurd.
Can you blame him?
By the way...
I just wanted to point out the interviewer in the video where Downey walks out as poor skills. He can't say a full sentence without the word "uh" which if any of you have taken an interpersonal communications class or speech class will know it is not a word but a filler. He didn't even really know where he was going with his interview. He did know he wanted to bring up questions that were not relevant. And if you pay attention, you can tell Downey knows exactly where he's headed with the questions and does not appreciate it. And truthfully I would have done the same as him.
If you really want to get better insight into Downey
Check out the video above. You really should because I'm not going to write about what people should already know about him. I'm not going to write about what he's said so many times. People need to go back and understand where he's coming from.
Instead of being a society who is so sensitive to everything people say we should just go back to the way it used to be. Get over it.
